Moon’s Tale of 6 Gamers - Home
Month 1 has drawn to a close with a rush of activity from all players involved! To take you all back and remind you of the task at hand, each ...
so for month 2 we were required to build and paint an army themed objective marker. I racked my brains and as the deadline loomed I noticed an old forgeworld moisture condensor sitting on my bench. Now although not immediately space wolf in essence I was drawn to using it due to the fact that Bulveye’s company (or a small contingent of it) are trapped on a non imperial planet for a considerable amount of time in ‘Wolf at the Door’ in ‘Tales of Heresy’ - I thought therefore that something as essential as water might be something they would need to fight for - hence the objective was born…
So here is a stage by stage of my recent addition Rune Priest Domar Gunnarrsson.
Stages 1-7
images of progress so far…

and a preview of a potential month 2 submission…

As you might have gathered already from other posts on the site, i have started a new Space Marine Army under the ‘Sons of Orar’ Chapter. The main motivation for starting the force is to co-inside with ‘a tale of 6 gamers’ that im running. ever since i heard about the concept and read about it in White Dwarf i have been hooked on the idea, so much so i though i would give it a damn good go and run one with some guys from our gaming group.
Month 1’s challenge is easy, build and paint 4-500points worth of basic FoC, specifically enough to play a small game (2 Troops and a lower level HQ). As Space Marines this isn’t all that easy actually as they don’t really fair too well at the very low points brackets and have very limited choices for troops. Never the less i went for:
1 Captain with Relic Blade
10 Tactical Marines with Fist, Melta & Missile Launcher
1 Rhino
5 Combat Scouts with Power Weapon.
(You should be able to see from the above pic the models in their current state - these need to be finished by 1st July to get full points!)
The reason for choosing Sons of Orar is largely fickle - i love the colour scheme and really wanted to paint something red/white - this made alot of sense to me.
I have finished (nearly) the test model (see pic below). The basing scheme is again something i really wanted to do from a modeling point of view and fits the fluff in the form of Orar’s Sepulchre. The Army are going to be ‘based’ at the Tomb of their spiritual Primarch and so the Polished tiles will fit in with this theme.
I will provide a step by step guide to the basing as well as the colour scheme as part fo the Month 1 rap-up, so stay tuned for that (if you are curious).
For ‘a Tale of 6 Gamers’ i will be doing a space marine army based on the ‘Sons of Orar’. Little is known of the second founding Ultramarines chapter in GW cannon so i have taken them in my own direction. See below for the basis of thier history to get a flavor of where i am going.
Important Events
749.M41 | Ultramarines announce a new captain for their expeditionary company on the eastern fringes of the galaxy. Captain Orar begins duties immediately.
750.M41 | Captain Orar makes his name with glorius achievements fighting the Tyrandis and other foul Xenos.
799.M41 | Orar’s perfected Planetstrike force quickly and efficiently deliver a crippling blow to any and all who would resist as the ultramarines secure the eastern sector.
810.M41 | While cleansing the planets of a double Starred system, Captain Orar’s Ultramarines discover the Craftworld Biel-Tan Eldar.
845.M41 | The years of war against Craftworld Biel-Tan have uncovered many rich artefacts and strange technologies, Orar keeps any they find to remember the extermination of this dying race of warriors.
137873.M41 | Captain Orar heroically dies in battle against a Tyranid Broodlord with his best Veterans by his side.
263873.M41 | Orar’s achievements are remembered in all of the Ultramarines Chapter. A grand burial on the world of Commrath is ordered by Guiliman. All the artifacts and relics of his campaigns are buried with him in the tomb.
888.M41 | The Battle of the Sepulchre. Biel-Tan’s Eldar forces launch an attack on Commrath and the tomb of Captain Orar,an entire Ultramarines Battle company mobilise to defend the tomb and push back the Eldar.
100889.M41 | In honour of his achievements, Orar’s Battle brothers are given the all clear to create a second founding chapter in his name.
621889.M41 | The Sons of Orar are founded in the name of thier beloved Captain.
999.M41| 250th anniversary of Orar’s Death. Stories are passed from generation to generation. Renowned for Captain Orar’s fighting prowess is likened to that of the great Guiliman himself; Orar becomes known as the Chapters ‘Spiritual Primarch’.
More to follow…
Month 1 has drawn to a close with a rush of activity from all players involved! To take you all back and remind you of the task at hand, each of the 6 players were asked to start a new 40k Force of up to 500 points that must include at least 2 Troops and 1 HQ choice (the minimum required for playing games of Warhammer 40k. Somewhat predictably, in the Wargaming hobby, all players were painting their models right up until the very last moments in a bid to get complete before the deadline, and not all made it! Shame on them! *cough*
Note: Those that players who didn’t quite make the deadline have a 1 week extension until the 8th July to get a reduced points reward.
So, let’s hear the start of each players tale…
Mr Wigg (real name Ian) a 26 year old self professed sales monkey from Tamworth, is one of the more meticulous painters at our local club, known for his precise detail and ever so steady hand. Although a keen tactician, he has often cited a strong theme as more important than a cheesy army list.
“They are a project i have had planned for many, many years and only ever tinkered with. I collected lots of bits and specific models over time but have never really had the opportunity to sit down and work on them at any great length, this seemed like an opportunity to finally get to work on them!”
“[they are] one of the less fortunately named official chapters out there (I think only the Rainbow Warriors are worse off!)”
“For the uninitiated, the Space Sharks are a chapter that took part in the Babab War on the loyalist side. There was a brief section about them in one of the original Rogue Trader books that documented the conflict, but other than that there’s very little official fluff regarding them. What is known is that they have access to large amounts of Terminator armour and Dreadnoughts, and prefer drop pod assaults.”
“The list i have been roughly working towards is:
Captain - bolter and power weapon -115
Tac Squad - 10 marines, meltagun and plasmacannon -180
Tac Squad - 5 marines, just bolters -90
Scout Squad - 5 scouts, sniper rifles -75
Drop Pod (undecided as to which squad to give it to) -35
—Total -495pts —-”
Unfortunately Wigg hasn’t quite finished for the Month 1 deadline.

1- Black undercoat
2- Basecoat of the Foundation Adeptus Battlegrey. Being a foundation colour it spreads nicely when watered down slightly but still covers in one coat. I try to stick to just the armour but at this stage i don’t try to be too neat
3- The chest eagle and any skull or other Aquila motifs are picked out in white. The backpack vents and bits of bolter not covered by casing are painted chainmail
4-Badab black wash over the whole model. Just one coat usually works fine, i try to do this quickly and use a big brush to avoid streaks.
5- Finally the detail work. Pouches are picked out in bestial brown, straps and gun grips in Scorched brown, then brown ink is put over all these. Cabling, suit seals and the bolter casing are painted black, eyes are filled in with black and then coloured with Regal Blue, any metal studs are picked out in black and then painted Chainmail, the battle damage and scratches on the armour are done the same. The helmet stripe is Red Gore
“I’m hoping this will give me the motivation to get a sizeable, and more importantly, workable force. I’ve not done too many so far, but I’m impressed with the ones i have. They’re still not finished either, i still haven’t had the nerve to try out any degree of weathering for fear of wrecking them, but there’s already bullet holes and scrapes modelled on and waiting”
There really is nothing like playing with a completed and fully painted force! We all know painted Missile Launchers hit more often, right?

Magnus (real name Ben), 30 year old College Lecturer from Coventry, is Often dubbed ‘King Fluff’. Not one to be deterred by a challenge, Magnus will often go to the ends of the earth just to make something fit GW canon. Being Competitive really does come a distant second to his ambitious conversions and strict themes.
“Space wolves were my first army, over 15 years ago now…”
[as he places his head in his hands]
“They are something i have wanted to re-visit for absolutely ages but have always got so many projects on the go!”
Magnus’ garage could double up as a Forgeworld Retail outlet, boxes and boxes of unfinished goodies fill every shelf!
“not really, although i am really looking forward to that! I love the fluff around the Battle for Prospero with Magnus the Red’s Thousand Sons waging war against the Space Wolves, i have recently completed a pre-heresy Thousand Sons force, so it made a lot of sense to undertake a Pre Heresy Space wolf force too!”
“For those that don’t know, Space Wolves are predominantly a Drop Pod force, this is something i wanted to focus on”
“Initially the force looks like this:
Dreadnought with twin-linked heavy bolters and a heavy flamer + Drop Pod (storm bolter)
8 Bloodclaws + Drop Pod (storm bolter)
8 Bloodclaws + Drop pod (storm bolter)”
“I REALLY hate making these damn Drop Pods! tehy are great kits but so fiddly!”
Unfortunately Magnus didn’t really get close to finishing the painting site, mainly because he has decided to pretty much build his marines (yes all 16 of them) from scratch! (1000 babies cry out in pain!) He assures me however that the tough part is now over and he will “easily” make the 8th of July extension. Check back here then to find out! [edit: unfortunatly Ben didnt make the extension, boooo!]

“I like the idea of collecting an army in this way! in the past i have always bought all of the models and then slaved away at them en-masse until complete, I’m genuinely interested in seeing how this building block, step by step system works and if it can help me build my armies in future.”
Couldn’t agree more! hopefully others observing this can take something from the process and have more success getting a finished army to the gaming table.

Monkey (real name Adam), 24 year old Software Engineer from Tamworth, is an Ork. No really. monkey has played
Orks for some time now, and as much as we have tried to persuade him to look into other armies, its never
really come off. As an expert Fantasy player, Monkey has a keen eye for tactics and can make even the poorest
odds fall in his favour; however monkey is no powergamer, delivering gorgeous models time after time (even if
they are mostly Orks!).
“Firstly i didn’t want to play humans of any kind! Especially not Power-Armoured humans! Everyone knows how much I detest the fact that the Imperium is central to every event in the WH 40,000 universe and feel that the Xenos need more attention. I can’t stand painting hordes because it lowers the quality of each paintjob. I like to control the battlefield and use tactics to achieve my aims and I want to perform in the movement phase, shooting phase and assault phase. No more one-dimensional armies, no more gunline vs hordes.
So I decided to go for Eldar. I wanted an elite-heavy army that functioned like a very intelligent toddler who knew exactly which hole to put the square peg into”
“I decided to go for Swordwind. This is styled around the Biel-Tan Craftworld and their aggressive stance against the rest of the galaxy - but it isn’t Biel-Tan. My particular force is centralised around a Farseer and her cadre of warriors as they fight to reclaim one of the lost Maiden Worlds from a bunch of confused, trespassing aliens.”
“My list is:”
HQ: Farseer (55) Doom (25) Singing Spear (3) = 83
Troops: 5 Rangers (95) = 95
Troops: 8 Dire Avengers (96) Exarch (12) Power-Weapon & Shimmershield (15) Bladestorm (15) = 138
Elites: 5 Fire Dragons (80) = 80
Dedicated Transport (For Dire Avengers): Wave Serpent, Twin Linked Shuriken Catapult, Energy Field (90)
Twin-Linked Shuriken Cannon (10) = 100
Total: 500 Points
“This is a list that I know will not win every game. It’s implicitly weak because it relies getting fragile units close to the enemy in order to do any damage (apart from the rangers) without any cc support.”
Unfortunately Monkey was another of the unfortunate players to not meet the painting deadline.
“I had an issue with a delivery of most of my models for this month so only had just over a week of painting, which wasn’t enough in the end!
I plan to build the entire army without helmets, Exarchs aside, and so I made use of some Wood Elf heads courtesy of Mr. Golding. [Josh, from Tamworth Games Club] I was hesitant initially, but decided that the half-masks really make stylish alternatives to helmets.
I feel that many hobbyists get overly concerned with being completely loyal to the fluff of whatever game system they happen to be playing, and this often turns budding creativity into obsessive canonism. I’ve never
gotten on well with the dark, gothic, overly ‘real’ theme of the 40k universe and usually seek to break away from/bitch about this whenever I can; so my girly Space Elves have anime hair!”

“I’m very interested in the ‘tale of’ method to building a new army, i have never done something like this before, it should give us a great opportunity to learn the tactics and create the fluff for our armies as we go along; I also really needed a new 40k force (other than Orks), its very refreshing!”
Here, here! We shall be watching the space elves with a keen eye in months to come! ….cheesy beaches!

Moon (real name Mat), 26 year old Online Marketing Manager from Tamworth, often has 1 and a half eyes on cheese. An enthusiastic but inexperienced painter, Moon’s attention often lies in crafting competitive Army lists.
“Firstly they are an(other) Space Marine chapter, so i will be using the new Space Marine Codex i have been hearing so much about; One of Games Workshops latest Powercreep Codex’s. The Son’s of Orar are a second Founding Ultramarines chapter with very little official fluff. They have 1 picture in the New Codex and tiny mentions here and there. The idea is they were founded in the name of Captain Orar of the Ultramarines, someone who made his name fighting the many Xenos races of the galaxy.”
“I’m Mainly a Chaos Marine player and have always been a bit jealous of our loyalist brethren and all of their nice new clean toys! so for some time i wanted to start a Marine force. when the Black reach set came out and then the new codex, it made a lot of sense to bring forward these plans. The major reason for Son’s Of Orar is colour scheme, i really wanted to paint something Red and White…”
Captain, Relic Blade, Digital Weapons - 140
Dreadnaught, Multimelta, DCCW + Heavy Flamer - 115
5 man Tactical squad, Powerfist, Rhino - 150
5 man Scout Squad, Combat blades, Power weapon - 90
Total 495
Moon did not finish painting his models in time either - some did though, honest!
“I had my test model painted ages and ages ago, however things just get in the way, days of apathy, a crazy basing scheme and spending a whole week on a rhino have plagued this month! I will get it all finished by next week though! i promise!” [edit: Moon did complete the challenge before the 1 week extension]
“I have played a good handful of games with this force and derivatives of across the month trying to get a feel for space marines and the best way to play them. i have come to the conclusion that 500points really isn’t the best level to play them at! i lost 3, drew 2 and won only 1 game this month, it has been soul destroying!
I am very much looking forward to the following months where i can get stuck into some meaty/cheesy combo’s and start to hold my own.”

“I don’t own a 100% painted army, this really bothers me! because i chop and change units a lot trying to find nice combo’s i rarely get to finish anything, I’m really keen to use this process to get a complete painted force to play with.”

Lex (real name Alex), 30 year old UniversityAccademic Publishing Rep from Tamworth, loves his fluff! As a fairly new player but veteran hobbyist, Lex brings an interesting twist of knowledgeable enthusiasm to a tale of. Lex’s Painting skills improve by the day, we just wonder if an Ork Hoard will be the breaking of him!
“My other army are Crimson Fist Space Marines and i wanted to pick something that was completely different to that style! Ork’s made sense because of the black reach box set, and i have always liked the orky idea.”
“yeah i knew from the very beginning that i wanted to do deff Skulls with some snakebite influence. Unsurprisingly this was largely based on the fluff. I had this idea for a wierdboy exiled from his clan and then worshiped by grots, so i ran with it and it was the starting point for my army. I couldn’t resist the ‘Blue’ of the deff Skullz when i saw them and just knew they would form the main part of my army.”
Rag-gutz wierdboy warphead - 85pts
10 grots + Runtherd - 40pts
11 Ard boyz + Nob with Klaw - 150 pts
looted wagon with 2x big shootas and skorcha - 65pts
12 boyz + Nob with Klaw - 113pts
Trukk with red paint - 45pts
498pts
Lex completed his painting challenge!! *sound the bells!* Congratulations Lex, a maximum 5 points!
It’s worth noting that Lex also has the largest model count for Month 1 too, no mean feat!

“For Rag-Gutz himself I used an old rogue trader Mad boy model and converted the pose to look spaced out and down. i have also tried to use quite a few conversions in the army, like the looted wagon/rhino, chaos lord’s Power Fist and an old Ork Trukk.
To make up the points for this week (without painting 40 boyz) I gave the ‘Ard boyz a looted wagon as transport with a Burner. I have chosen to convert a rhino for this adding a speeder flamer and an orc driver. I have painted this with a base of Necron Abyss, a dark blue wash, the detail paint in utra blue and then highlight in ferris grey.”
And a very good start it is too! The wierdboy looks very small, but with the Grot’s he kind of fits in nicely! We like!
“I played 3 games this month, won 2 and lost 1, im very new to Orks and still getting to grips with the different playstyle, but I’m enjoying it so far!”
“It was the process that interested me most, i was going to start Orks anyway, however when i heard about this from moon it sounded like a cool idea - i loved the White Dwarf on recently and it was perfect timing!”

Whitehorn (real name Ross), 25 year old Web Developer from Tamworth, is a Veteran 40k player of over 15 years. Collecting for so long its understandable that Whitehorn is a very competent player and has at one time or another played with almost every army around! a Dab hand with a paintbrush, he recently won the local gaming clubs annual Painting competition; Whitehorn should provide a good balance of excellent models and tactical success.
“Many of the models, both old and new, exist within the limbo that is my archived projects (bits box). Being part of my bits box means somewhere, sometime, I planned to invest in and develop this army. everybody else chose ’samey’ armies and i wanted to pick something a bit different”
“I took an interest to a small piece of background material attached to the Soul Grinders. Mention of a neutral daemonic forge within Chaos that produced such engines really grabbed my imagination. Also, being a Pre-Heresy fanatic, this opened a door into another interest of mine - the Dark Mechanicum of Mars. Imagination or not, I think the two are linked in various ways, a way - a path that I have chosen to explore.”
Lord of Change 265
Master of Sorcery

6 Horrors 107
Changeling
7 Plaguebearers 110

Congratulations to Whitehorn, who also completed his painting challenge for month 1! a Maximum 5 points to you too!
We clearly saved the best till last huh?

“My army will be largely metallic and blue tones, but each unit is likely to be slightly different. Here’s a breakdown of my Plague Bearers which are based on Servitor models”
1. Paint with TIN BITZ completely.
2. Drybrush BOLTGUN METAL.
3. Wash with BADAB BLACK.
4. Drybrush BOLTGUN METAL
5. & 6. Paint flesh areas with DHENEB STONE
7. Wash flesh with ASURYAN BLUE
8. & 9 Paint raised flesh areas with DHENEB STONE
10. Highlight skin with DHENEB+SKULL WHITE mix
“Being neutral, I have the freedom to employ the entire armoury of the daemons without repercussions from over-zealous fluff fanatics. The Forge employs and serves all deities, with the constructs holding strong reverence and oaths of fealty to it. I would like to have a heavy representation of constructs as far as feasible, it’s just a shame Obliterators are not within the list. Drawing inspiration, I have focused upon the works of H R Giger. String impressions of hybridisation between flesh and machine flow well with my plans. The dark metallic’s and eerie blues are definitely a style I wish to explore.”
“Much like the others, it is the process that interested me most, getting an army completed to a good standard bit by bit”

Getting the First Month out of the way is a great feeling, the signs of relief are showing across many faces. The prospect of beginning a new army is never easy but the hard work is now over for most, pushing on to month 2 and beyond we can see all of these 6 armies develop and change.
The Score Board:
1.Lex | 5 points
- Whitehorn | 5 Points
3. Moon | 3 Points
4. Magnus | 0 Points
- Monkey | 0 Points
- Wigg | 0 Points
After Month 1 each player should have a 4-500points army capable of playing small games of 40k with the minimum of 2 troops and 1 HQ. In Month 2 the first aim is for every player to add to their force to bring it up to 750 points. As an extra task each player will be required to make an objective marker for use in their Tale of… games.
The scoring:
5 points are awarded for painting ‘on time’ (end of July)
3 points are awarded for painting ‘1 week late’
5 points are awarded for a complete objective ‘on time’
3 points are awarded for a complete objective ‘1 week late’
With a Maximum of 10 points available this month and over half of peoples progress from month 1 looking so bad, this could be a great opportunity for people to get right back in the game!
Remember: You can view any of the ‘Moon’s a Tale of 6 Gamers’ articles and progress logs by using this Index; bookmark it and check in occasionally to see how things are going. See you next month!
Disclaimer: quotes may have been paraphrased, this is intended to let the article flow, if you would like more information on any of the Players or any particular part, feel free to drop a question on here or one of the player blogs and you are sure to get an enthusiastic response!
My Tale of… force will initially begin as part of the supporting force dispatched to Antimon following the defeat of the Dark Eldar and the consequent battles for complience.
The force will begin as fast insertion utilising transports and transported support, this will then develop into a heavier assault force as the Greybeards prepare for translation to Prospero following Antimon returning to the imperial fold.
I now have the elements of the force ready for building.
As part of this project I will also be making generic combat squads of armour types 2 (Crusade) to 6 (Corvus). I’m currently waiting for forgeworld resins to complete Mk4 and Mk’s 2&3.
These will then form the backbone of my infantry models, with characters being converted out of the generic base. Squads will have mixed armour variants to make then visually exciting and a little more intereting to paint.
Initially the force looks like this;
Dreadnought with twin-linked heavy bolters and a heavy flamer + Drop Pod (storm bolter)
8 Bloodclaws + Drop Pod (storm bolter)
8 Bloodclaws + Drop pod (storm bolter)
For ease all 16 of the Bloodclaws will be equipped with MK5 (Heresy) armour although this is not technically correct as MK5 was issued at the start of the heresy, ideally the armour should be either Iron or Maximus (Mk3/Mk4) in terms of the background. If FW come through in the next week then the Bloodclaws will be armoured in the correct type - failing that Mk5 will have to do.
So far I’ve played 2 games with the force and scored 1 win and 1 draw, so at the moment I intend no changes to the force although horde armies may make me re-think this
So another 2 games under my belt another win and another draw - these guys look promising…especially against Eldar and Space Marines - two armies I thought would pose the most issues in terms of speed and fire power.
Slow progress so far with the build and paint of these guys but hopefully now work will be a little less mental over the next 2 weeks - and the paint scheme being pretty simple, I can hopefully nail my month 1 quota……with a little luck.

And my HQ choice a mighty Venerable Dreadnought…

4th June
Well this is my first progress entry: Month one sees the task of getting together a basic force organisation 2 troops and a HQ. I plan on going for a hard boyz mob with scavenged marine parts and a Nob with a stolen chaos lord power fist and a Grot mob - I am using the old grot models for this as I want Rag-gutz and his grots to be ferral in appearence compared to their Deff Skulz allies. These are all made up and are started in terms of painting.
For Rag-Gutz himself I plan to use an old rogue trader Mad boy model and covert the pose to look spaced out and down (still awaitin the model to arrive).
To make up the points for this week (without painting 40 boyz) I am giving the Hard boyz a looted wagon as transport with a Burner. I have chosen to convert a rhino for this adding a speeder flamer and an orc driver. I have painted this with a base of Necron Abiss, a dark blue wash, the detail paint in utra blue and then highlight in ferris grey.
9th June
Right, Finished the looted rhino, (not 100% happy but i am new to orks) finished the hard boy Nob and the boyz have had their first coat. Plus my Mad boy has arrived !!!!- I have decided to pose him holding special lucky charms ( a snakes head and a skull) to help give him that - i dont really belong here- kind of look, will be undercoating him today with the grots to work on over the weekend.
12th June
Ard Boyz and Nob nearly Complete. Used camo green undercoat, highlight goblin green, thraka green wash, highlight camo green for the skin. The blue is necron abiss, highlight utra blue, aruman blue wash (?) the highlight ferris grey.
decided today that I am going to need a little more pointage for the first month so the new plan is:
HQ Madboy warphaed - 85pts
Madboy squad Grots and Runrherd with grot pod - 45pts
12 ard boyz, 1 Nob with looted power klaw, boss pole - 160pts
12 boyz, 1 Nob with big choppa - 99pts
looted wagon, ard case, skorcha, big shoota, grot riggers, ram, stikkbomb, armor plates - 90pts
total - 479 pts
23rd June
Right getting to the business end of the month and have 11 boyz to finish !!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!! need coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
July 6th
Wow - what a month but ta da !!! got all the boyz painted on time and 5 points in the bag. But it ain eazy being green and it was touch and go - I had to paint 1 boyz the night before the final day.
so the completed first month list is:
Rag-gutz wierdboy warphead - 85pts
10 grots + Runtherd - 40pts
11 Ard boyz + Nob with Klaw - 150 pts
looted wagon with 2x big shootas and skorcha - 65pts
12 boyz + Nob with Klaw - 113pts
Trukk with red paint - 45pts
498pts
For month two we have been challenged to add 250 points to the list and create an objective. More on the objective to come.
For the 250 points i plan to paint and convert 5 deffkoptas - I realised that my army lacked any armor killers at range and with 3 marine chapters to face this is essential. Also my army (for orks) played too slow so an injection of mad pace was required.
I am having them all with twin linked rokkits and one with a buzz saw - I plan to convert some bomb squiqs later on in the tale for 5 big bombs.
9th July
Right built all of my Deffskulkoptas, and painted one - i have gone for a metalic blue feel to the kopta with the same paint scheme as the hard boyz, Necron abiss base, untra blue and dark blue wash but instead of highlighting in ferris grey I have chipped the pannels and weather streaked them with Necron abiss. I have painted under the kopta and in less shaded areas ferris grey to give contrast.
I have built my objective and it is awaiting glueing and undercoat - The objective is “the paint dump” I figured that if the Deffskulzpaint everything blue for luck then they must have alot of blue paint, and therefore must value it highly.
So I have constructed a grid platform like the old space hulk floor and cast crates and barrels. I am going to model it so that it looks like the area has been ramshacked and paint stollen.
The idea behind this is that the small war party heading towards the paint dump with their new weid boy arrive at the objective only to find that it has be plundered and this triggers the rage of the deffskulz and Waaaaagh!!! Gobface is launched to ”get dem dat did it” - and it Ork logic this does not mean look atthe evidence, it means kill everything on the planet that is not an ork and you are bound to kill them ”dat did it”.
I have also in advance of the waaaagh begining created Warlord Wozgash Gobface. (his story to follow month 3 or 4)
I have tried to make him as large and imposing as I can - he is made up of: Gazguuls body, Blackreach head, Nobz top knot, two boyz shooters, bosspole, black reach warboss twin linked bigshooter and a converted chain saw power Klaw. He is soooo big I am going to have to put him on a 50mm base min. Oh and i am going to give him a squigg hound - hopefully a converted Hell hound but wait and see.

objective made

Rag-gutz was not the most popular Ork in his tribe; from an early age it was clear that he was different. As an orkling his stomach used to swell up to five times its size then with an enormous bang light and fire would shoot out of every orifice followed by great plumes of smoke that smelt and tasted like gasoline.
This at first was amusing to the tribe especially when they tied squigs to him to watch them frazzle and pop. Many a night was spent betting on which squigs would survive, however as fellow orks began to get singed and then fried alive by the increasing power and range of these random attacks, the chief decided that it would be for the best if he was exiled to the near by grot camp to be trained as a herder.
As Rag-gutz became bigger he learned to channel his power and realised that “Da belly fing appended after mi ed got hot” and that if he concentrated really ‘ard he could change the effects of the bang (only sometimes however), he also realised that he had an almost God like status to the simple grots. They would often stand and eat popsquig with awe in their eyes every time one of their fellows exploded after bolt of fire from Rag – gutz rear and cheered when he disappeared and reappeared inside a very surprised squig. Rag - Gutz found that the more exited his crowd became the more powerful the energy that pulsed through him was and he relished the feeling.
With the raw power filling his head and with an army of cackling grots by his side Rag decided that his destiny lay far beyond his simple tribe.
Upon hearing about a new Warlord in the sector that was pulverising imperial heads, Rag – Gutz offered his services: any chance to test how much mess his power could cause.
The warlord Wozgash Gobface intrigued by the idea of an exploding Ork sent a small band to collect their new asset. If nothing else he would provide an evenings entertainment.
Month Two Story
Month two
Rag-gutz had not really thought about what to expect from the horde he was joining, if he was honest he had rarely thought at all about much more than eatin’ fightin’ and exzplodin’.
As he waited in the forest clearing to be collected Rag-gutz could feel the ground shaking underneath him, “mus be da trucks, av eard they uge an Full a Boyz” Rag explained to his followers.
When he first saw the Ard boyz who had come to fetch him Rag-gutz got so exited he roasted two of his grot worshipers. Much to the annoyance of the rest, who had not been selected to die in the glorious fireball that erupted from Rags rear end.
However, when the two vehicles carrying the DeffSkulz stopped - the shaking continued and became more apparent.
A large Ork with a bright Blue face leapt out of the first truck, “da big bozz says u r ta come wid us, wierdy” – “ba first we gotz to tak care of a weeny bug probz-slem”. Rags eyes followed the movement of the big Orks huge power klaw as it raised and pointed over Rags head.
Rag-gutz spun around and what he saw filled him with a rush of raw waaaagh energy like he had never had before. He could feel it bubbling inside, churning, aching to burst free then – whoosh ka boom !!!!!!! – three grots evaporated but the large ork and his mob appeared bigger in size, even greener and glowed with pure energy
“woz u dun” said the big Ork about to mush Rag, he raised the huge fist and - “ang on I feelz strongerz, Waaaaagh!!! come on boyz lets rip deez fings legz off” He then took off past Rag – gutz followed by 20 or so boyz head long in to the tyranid swarm.
Caught up in the excitement Rag charged in to the melee, followed by his cackling grots.
‘Ead Butz had never felt so powerful, sure he had a stolen power klaw and he could rip off a hummez arm, but now he found he could rip these bugs apart – “evans dozz big unz wid da barbz.” It was not long before only limbs and mush was left of the swarm.
All the boyz leapt back into the trukks. Rag-gutz was dragged into one and his followers left to erm…. follow. Rag-gutz approached ‘Ead Butz – “iz I seein da boss now”, “na” replied ‘Ead “youz ain blue enough yet” then he turned to the Ork driver of the trukk “to da paintz pile now you son of a squigg or I wilz pop ya bonce off”.
Its May 2009 and there it feels like a good time to start that new Warhammer 40K army i have had in the back of my mind for the last 6 months. It just so happens that i have found 5 other people who have been thinking just that very thing themselves! With this much combined desire to venture into uncharted 40K territory it would be rude to do nothing about it, so without further ado, i can introduce you to - ‘Moon’s Tale of 6 Gamers 2009′.
With many of us just recently back from the Tempus Fugitives - Age of the Emperor campaign weekend its fair to say there is a fair amount of enthusiasm to get stuck into the next project. We are very fortunate with the 6 players involved to have something from every angle of the Wargaming hobby, the next 6 months should make for some great insight into how different people tackle a new army, and whats important to them along the way.
We are likely to see some fantastic standards of painting & presentation throughout the event with real input from Wigg, Whitehorn and Monkey; this is definitely something to follow - we will do everything possible to get some of their styles and tips documents for you to see and use for inspiration! Magnus will likely be providing some of the best conversions you have seen with his keen ‘pre-heresy’ style. Lex will undoubtedly attempt the most courageous story for his army, adding plenty of depth to the event. Where as Moon’s (as well as others) personal input will likly be from a more competitive angle, aiming for a more tournament platform army.
The Event will last around 6 rounds, each of approximately 1 month in length. The Idea, based on White Dwarf’s own ‘A Tale of 4 Gamers’, being to stage the army construction process into manageable chunks, taking into account all aspects of the hobby from painting & modeling to playing and exploring the 40k rule-set.
To keep things interesting, and to add a little bit of competitive but pointless fun to the mix we will be keeping a score as the Event unravels. We will be applying the following basic scores to each round:
+5 points for models painted on time
+3 points for models painted late
+0 points for models not painted within a week of deadline
As well as this bonus points will also be available each round; we have quite a few ideas in store that will test all areas of the hobby and hopefully take advantage of the Games Workshop Release’s along the way. However, there is no need to get into that now, there is no harm in keeping a little suspense in the back for future rounds. When it comes down to judging these we will have the assistance of an impartial representative frm the local games club (Tamworth Gmaes Club)
Here’s what we can set-out - the overall aim is for each player to get an army of at least 1500points. This might be achieved with the minimum of models and units by planning out what’s required and explicitly following it throughout, or it might be the case that a layer has many more points ready than this and can effectively swap out the odd unit to make a more customisable 1500point force.
As we enter the first round we will get to find out alot more about each of the 6 players and their armies, for now all we know are their names and basic ideas:
Monkey’s Swordwind Eldar
Wigg’s Space Sharks Space Marines
Lex’s Death Skullz Ork Klan
Magnus’s Pre-Heresy Space Wolves
Whitehorn’s Forge of Souls Chaos Daemons
Moon’s Son’s of Orar Space Marines
To get us started nice and easily the first round will be purely based on starting an army with a small Warband force and having it painted on time. The Warband will likely form the core of any final army; however we are also going to get our first feel for how the army will look and feel with new colour schemes and conversions.
Round 1 will start on June 1st and will last until June 30th. We will bring you interim updates and maybe the odd picture followed by a full profile and run down of the round at the end of the month. All that’s left to be said is we hope you all enjoy following it as much as the gamers enjoy participating.
Good Luck to all and most importantly - Have fun!
